Tours in the Sperrgebiet
Day tours can be undertaken into the forbidden Diamond Area to view Bogenfels, the 55 m-high rock arch which juts into the Atlantic Ocean, the modern diamond mine and old ghost town at Elizabeth Bay and the seal colony at Atlas Bay. Visitors can also explore the ghost town of Pomona and the legendary valley of Märchental (fairy-tale valley), where early prospectors collected diamonds by moonlight. A permit issued by the Namibian Police is required to enter this area. These permits are arranged by the tour operators who take visitors into the Sperrgebiet.
Northern Sperrgebiet concession
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) gives tour operators such as Uri Adventures, Coastway Tours and Lüderitz Walvis Bay 4x4 Tours permission to conduct a limited number of trips along the stretch of coastline between Sylvia Hill northwards to Sandwich Harbour in the wilderness section of the Namib-Naukluft Park.
Participants drive in their own vehicles and are accompanied throughout the trip by two or three vehicles and a nature conservator from the MET. Points of interest visited include Saddle Hill, Koichab Pan, Sylvia Hill, Conception Bay, Langewand, the wreck of the Eduard Bohlen, Fischersbrunn and Sandwich Harbour.
Soweit ich weiß, hat Coastway-Safari´s aus Lüderitz z.Zt. die Konzesession!
