NDF shoots at tourists
Niel Terblanche
Two visitors from abroad narrowly missed being killed after members of the Namibian Defence Force along with an Anti-Poaching Unit of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism opened fire with automatic assault rifles on their rented vehicle in the Babwata National Park in the far North-East of the country.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence, Gideon Shuuya confirmed the incident that occurred on Tuesday but said details of what exactly transpired are still unclear. He also confirmed that the unit consisted of both NDF and APU members.
Shuuya’s counterpart at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Romeo Muyunda, said he is still making inquiries into the incident. He said very little information is available and did not want to venture a confirmation.
Neither Muyunda nor Shuuya could say where in the Babwata National Park the incident occurred.
Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, from the Public Relations Division of the Namibian Police, stated that such an incident was not reported in the Kavango East or Zambezi Region.
Inquiries from tourism and lodge operators in the national park indicated that the attack on the tourist vehicle might be the result of the paramilitary unit being dressed in civilian clothes, while heavily armed with AK47 assault rifles.
The tourists reportedly fled from the heavily-armed patrol when the officials wanted to search through their vehicle. The vehicle was reportedly hit several times by gunfire, but the visitors escaped unharmed.
