Normal to above normal rainfall for SADC for 2019/20 season
WINDHOEK, 02 NOV (NAMPA) – Normal to above normal rainfall is expected for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) for the first half of the rainy season.
This is according to the rainfall outlook for the 2019/20 season contained in the early warning advisory bulletin for the 2019/20 Southern Africa regional rainfall season released by the SADC Climate Services Centre in October.
“The rainfall forecast for the first part of the season (October to December) shows a normal to above normal outlook in most parts of the region,” it said, adding that this presents a good opportunity for good agricultural performance.
It further said the possibility of above normal rainfall presents possible risks that can be associated with flash flooding, trans-boundary pest and disease outbreaks, latching of nutrients, as well as the destruction of agricultural infrastructure, including roads.
“Excessive water will lead to possible migration of fish species particularly from northern Angola into Namibia and further downstream into South Africa along the Benguela current ecosystem channel,” the bulletin reads.
The outlook for pasture and availability of water that will benefit livestock throughout the season, is also good.
Farmers are urged to take advantage of the first three months of the season to grow crops with a variety that will give the advantage to achieve high yield.
Normal to above-normal rainfall is also predicted for the second half of the season (January to March) for countries like Angola, Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, central Madagascar, northern Mozambique and Zambia.
“Attention needs to be paid to monitoring of flash floods and overflow of water from Angola into Namibia during this period,” the bulletin said.
The outlook for Angola’s coastal strip, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, southern Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zimbabwe for the second half of the rainy season is similar, with normal to above normal rainfall expected for these areas in the second half of the season as well.
“Given these conditions, member states need to intensify water harvesting techniques and increase catchment areas,” the bulletin said.
