Zimbabwe ambassador calls for lifting of sanctions
WINDHOEK, 24 OCT (NAMPA) – Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Namibia, Rofina Chikava on Wednesday called for the removal of economic sanctions on Zimbabwe, as the country prepares to observe Anti-Sanction Day on Friday.
Appealing to the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation of Namibia, Chikava said her request, outlined in a media statement, is in line with the declaration made at the 39th SADC Heads of State and Government Summit in Tanzania this year.
The declaration called on SADC Heads of State and Government to call for the removal of sanctions on Zimbabwe at all international forums they attend - such as the recently concluded 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Chikava in the statement said the imposing of illegal and unjustified sanctions on Zimbabwe by the US and European Union (EU) in 2001 and 2002 respectively, were an uncalled for reaction in response to the country’s re-distributive Land Reform programme of the year 2000.
“Although the European Union has lifted much of its sanctions in 2014, political sanctions against some senior government officials, service chiefs and key industries remain in place,” she said.
The statement further reads that the USA this year extended the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZIDERA) by another year to 2020.
The Act places 100 individuals and companies from Zimbabwe on a list of individuals who pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to US Foreign Policy.
According to the statement, Zimbabwe has no history of aggression against any nation and the country is suffering as a result of the sanctions because it cannot access Western international credit markets, neither can it trade freely on any international markets.
“The sanctions have an impact on everything in Zimbabwe, the term ‘Targeted Sanctions’ is not true, because everyone in Zimbabwe is affected,” the ambassador said.
Before sanctions, Zimbabwe had a well-developed input support on manufacturing and processing industries and now because of lack of lines of credit, bank loans and investments, industries are finding it difficult to retool and invest in new technology, she added.
“The unemployment rate in Zimbabwe is high due to the closure of some industries because of the sanctions, therefore it is necessary for those responsible for them to remove them so that Zimbabwe can move forward,” Chikava said.
