• An adult male lion was captured in Kafue National Park and transported by road to Liuwa. Unfortunately, this animal tragically died due to a suspected regurgitation and subsequent suffocation whilst under the effects of the immobilizing drugs. We are working with ZAWA to secure another male to complete this important translocation exercise.
• 4 Buffalo cows are outstanding for delivery; these are expected in the Park in the first week of November. These females will add to the viability of the herd already introduced. The animals in the boma have settled well and are in good condition, including the pregnant female.
• The safari hunter that was running an unsustainable operation in the GMA around the Park has finally withdrawn all of his staff and equipment from the GMA adjacent to the Park. This is a very positive development for the Park and conservation in the area. It is a concrete demonstration of ZAWA’s good intentions for the area.
• Eland continue to browse on community members’ cassava and other crops – it is anticipated that this will reduce as the rains increase and natural browse becomes more available and palatable.
