An important update : Dijara & Tshaa (March 2017)

The Government of Botswana owns all land in Botswana - and gave various Village Communities tourism licenses - to run campsites on their various concessions, as a way of empowering the villages and earning income. The Sankuyo and Khwai community Trusts' have been running okay so far (Kazikiini campsite and Khwai Magotho community campsite). But in the Mababe area, instead of running the campsites themselves (due to lack of knowledge and infrastructure) the Mababe Trust outsourced the management of the campsites to other companies for a rental fee. This was, according to the Botswana Tourism, against the regulations of the license and so, last week, they suspended the licenses until the decide whether it's okay or not. They will meet this week to decide and various appeals/letters are going back and forth between the Trust, the Minister of Tourism and the Botswana Tourism department.

So, until a decision is made, we've decided to pause taking any more bookings for these campsites (as licenses are technically suspended at the moment) until we hear more news. Any MARCH bookings will be moved to Khwai Community or Mankwe Campsites.

For clients with bookings at Dijara from April onwards, please dont panic as yet and please wait for us. The news from various people involved, back from Gaborone this week, is that the licenses will be reinstated - and/or bookings already taken will be honored (due to a clause in the Tourism act). But until we have that in writing from the Botswana Tourism, we'll wait for further instruction. And update you as soon as we hear any news.

Hallo,

Gruss M.

Info von Tara (Botswana Footprints) heute im 4x4 Community Forum:

The Dijara and Tshaa (Xanagaie) Campsites are no longer open due to licensing issues and so, we have moved just a few kilometers down the road and have rebuilt the DIZHANA campsite.
(which is fully licensed). The team have started cleaning and fixing and building. Campsites are open from 1st April.
All bookings for Dijara and Tshaa will be moved (and honoured in full) to Dizhana.

The good news is that the campsites have their own ablutions (with donkey boilers) and are in the same area and have the same wildlife opportunities as Dijara and Tshaa were.
The best news is that ANDRE will be there!

Botswana Footprints will do bookings as usual - The Mababe Trust staff clean and manage the ablutions and grounds.

We will be reissuing all paid invoices with new Vouchers (showing the new GPS co-ordinates)
Our Booking sheets are now open again and we look forward to sharing the beautiful Khwai and Mababe areas with you.

Dijara und Tshaa werden offensichtlich in Zukunft der Natur überlassen!
"does this now mean that Dijara and Tshaa will be returned to the bush and abandoned?"

" Friends went past on the weekend, all water tanks are gone and ablutions trashed. So I guess so!
The licencing ban there can be reinstated from the end of the year, so not sure if the Trust will take that up again then or not."

Gruß Bele
