"Robberies spike in Omaruru
SWAKOPMUND, 17 JAN (NAMPA) - Housebreaking and robberies have spiked in Omaruru, with the police reporting two robberies at a lodge this week in addition to various housebreakings last week.
Erongo Region Commander, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu in a police report issued on Thursday said a French pensioner camping at the Erongo Wilderness Lodge was robbed at knife point on Tuesday.
“Two suspects gained entry to the camper’s tent by cutting it open with a knife and threatening the tourist before taking off with property valued at about N.dollars 60 000,” Iikuyu said.
The same suspects broke into the office of a Namibian national at the lodge and stole two leather hats valued at N.dollars 1 010 and about N.dollars 400 in cash, also on Tuesday.
Both suspects have been arrested and were set to appear in the Omaruru Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
All of the items stolen from the tourist have been recovered, while the second complainant’s hats were also recovered and the cash is still outstanding.
These robberies occurred just a few days after a number of reports on housebreakings in Omaruru over the weekend.
According to the police, they received reports of four housebreakings and robberies involving mainly tourists and pensioners.
Valuables close to N.dollars 400 000 were stolen during these robberies and have not been recovered yet.
Iikuyu could not confirm whether these crimes were connected and whether the arrested suspects were involved, but police investigations are ongoing."
