Problem lions moved away from Brandberg
Niel Terblanche
The two well-known desert-adapted lions of the Ugab River that killed 172 small stock farm animals in the vicinity of the White Lady Lodge a little more than a week ago have been moved to the Huab River further north to avoid further conflict with communal farmers.
Shortly after the incident, officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism along with world-renowned lion expert, Dr Flip Stander had already travelled to the lodge to assess the damage and to find a way to save the lions from being killed.
Since the incident, the lions have been darted and fitted with radio collars. The collars will enable officials and conservationists to monitor the movements of the predators which mean they will be able to prevent similar events in the future.
On Tuesday evening, the pair of lions, a male and a pregnant female were darted for a second time in week.
According to Sarah Roos, a manager at the Brandberg White Lady Lodge, Dr Stander assisted by MET officials then loaded the pair of predators, known a s Nkosi and Cheeky, in vehicles and transported them further north to the Huab River. The lions were set free about a 120 kilometres upriver from Torra Bay.
Despite suffering financial damage in terms of stock losses, the man responsible for the farming, Mr. Tertius Roos said that he holds no grudge against the lions.
“This area is home to the lions as well. The damage is bad but we will have to live with it for now. We definitely do not want to see the lions killed because they acted on instinct.”
He said the sheep belong to the owner of the White Lady lodge, Mr. Naude de Jager, and that the animals were farmed to provide the lodge with a steady supply of meat.
Roos also said the Brandberg White Lady Lodge did not close down for business because of the incident as was reported on by certain news outlets.
“The only place that was closed for visitors was the White Lady Rock Paintings and they have been closed since before Christmas because the operators went on holiday.”
In the meantime, the pair of lions woke up in their new surroundings unscathed. Dr Stander, who dedicates his life to the study and conservation of desert-adapted lions, told the lodge managers and visitors during his stay there that the pair originated from the Huab River and that they were simply taken home.
